What Counts as a Niche App Worth Building

By Joshua Chen · About / experience · urbanu619@gmail.com

“Niche” does not mean tiny forever or weird for its own sake. A build-worthy niche usually has a sharp user, a repeating job, and a path to charge without a social network on day one.

Use this filter before you open an IDE — and before you fall in love with a marketplace zip. Hub: buy or build.

Worth-building traits (stack them)

Miss several of these and you are building a demo, not a product.

Super-vertical beats vague categories

Vague Sharper
AI Fitness App Hair Growth Tracker — fixed-angle photos, aligned timeline for transplant / treatment / grow-out
Personal Knowledge Base Screenshot Recall — search and understand the screenshots you already hoard

Vertical wins because landing page, store keywords, short demo video, pricing story, and community all get easier.

Eight gate questions

Answer in writing:

  1. Who hits this weekly (or daily)?
  2. What clumsy workaround do they use now?
  3. Do they already pay for adjacent solutions?
  4. Can first use deliver value in ~60 seconds?
  5. Is there a low-cost channel (search, community, niche media, industry)?
  6. Does core value still hold without a large language model?
  7. If someone clones the UI, do data, workflow, or distribution still protect you?
  8. Are platform, copyright, privacy, and API risks controllable?

Two or more weak answers → park the idea or shrink the wedge.

After it passes

  1. Check whether inventory already maps to the job (marketplaces) — buy may beat build.
  2. Mine complaints with undervalued demand methods.
  3. Skim the idea pool for patterns, not for copy-paste validation.
